How do I become an assessor?

There are 2 basic ways of becoming an assessor.

  1. For those persons that are elected, either as a Selectman or to your local Board of Assessors, you are already legally the local assessor.

  2. If you are not elected, you are either appointed or contracted. Under this circumstance you must meet current NH Assessing Standards Board (ASB) education and experience requirements to perform ad valorem assessment work for NH communities. The current ASB requirements are found in their Chapter 300 rules, found here.

Where can I find and take assessing classes?

The ASB has outlined those organizations whose coursework is currently accepted for ad valorem education. The current ASB requirements are found in their Chapter 300 rules, found here. To learn what courses may currently be offered it is suggested you visit each organizations web site for details. In addition, the NHAAO offers an annual Summer School featuring IAAO classes and workshops along with the NH State Statutes course. Details for the Summer School can be found on the Education page, when available.
