There are 2 basic ways of becoming an assessor.
-
For those persons that are elected, either as a
Selectman or to your local Board of Assessors, you are already legally the
local assessor.
-
If you are not elected, you are either appointed or
contracted. Under this circumstance you must meet current NH Assessing
Standards Board (ASB) education and experience requirements to perform ad
valorem assessment work for NH communities. The current ASB requirements
are found in their Chapter 300 rules, found
here.
The ASB has outlined those organizations whose coursework
is currently accepted for ad valorem education. The current ASB requirements
are found in their Chapter 300 rules, found
here.
To learn what courses may currently be offered it is suggested you visit
each organizations web site for details. In addition, the NHAAO offers an
annual Summer School featuring IAAO classes and workshops along with the NH
State Statutes course. Details for the Summer School can be found on the
Education page, when available.
A CNHA is a Certified New Hampshire Assessor. This
designation is a joint program of the NHAAO and the New Hampshire Department
of Revenue Administration. In addition to successfully completing the
prescribed experience and coursework under
ASB 300 rules, those holding a CNHA designation must be a member in good standing of the NHAAO and complete a comprehensive exam covering all aspects of
ad valorem valuation in NH.
The exam is typically offered on an as needed basis
throughout the year. To learn when the next exam date is please email the
Certification
Committee.
Membership is open to any person with an interest in
assessing. Only those who are considered Regular members as defined in our
By-laws can hold office, vote and serve on certain committees.
